Before the Eruption
Before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii was a small city containing many small villages. They were dignified and classic houses and villas that lined the streets of Pompeii. Around 20,000 citizens lived there, before the Vesuvius eruption. This city was a very popular vacation destination for the Romans who would usually stay in "summer cottages" near areas with cafes and supermarkets. Residents of Pompeii however, would live in the small villages that would consist of houses, cafes market places and other daily facilities. In each village, there would be many little fresh fields full of crops, as the city is widely well-known for is farming and harvesting. 17 years before the eruption, there had been 2 earthquakes that violently shook the grounds of Pompeii. The first earthquake was quite a large one. This disaster had a wide destruction area which also sent movement around the volcano. A few years later, another one rattled the city, however was much smaller and did not do as much damage. These earthquakes became more and more frequent during the next 4-5 days. Although they were not all harmful, they were not expected either. |
