Roman Cuisine
In Pompeii, the Roman's diet consisted of a huge variety of foods. Most of
the foods were hand grown in fields, vineyards, and trees. This city produced fantastic white wines, which were sold in large markets. Fruits and vegetables grown on bushes and trees, were also taken to market places to be sold. The village stores were usually slow in business, however still managed to sell their wares. The most commonly stocked food items were fruits, vegetables, wines, cereals, milk, beans and fish! The specialty, according to locals in Pompeii, was fish. It was the most popular meat at the time. No other protein source was really available. The Romans would eat the fish either as a whole or chopped up with vegetables. Fish was most commonly served with another local Pompeii specialty, garum, a smooth fish sauce. Garum was a salty sauce with a strong smell, which the Romans highly enjoyed. It was sold in a tall clay containers. |
