Pompeii After the Eruption
After the tragic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the entire city of Pompeii was destroyed. As the eruption was so big, it also happened to damage the cities near it as well. The ash rained down into the city for six hours straight therefore covering the whole city in 25 meters of ash. Millions of Pompeii's population was covered in a thick layer of ash. Research said that the residents of Pompeii died from asphyxiation of the ash, which is when there is no oxygen supply to the body. More recently it was proven that the citizens did not die from asphyxiation, but from extreme heat. The temperatures in the area of the eruption raised up to 300 degrees celsius. The volcano was such a surprise to the city, and the people did not have time to flee. The ash covered the bodies in the positions that they were in, and has remained that way up until today. Because of this tragic incident, the city of Pompeii was forgotten for over 17 years. The city is still in ruins today. |
